Senior Scientist - Director of the Elettra 2.0 Project and Elettra Cluster Coordinator

Dr. Karantzoulis has worked in various branches of physics (high energy physics, non-linear physics and accelerator physics). He has worked at DESY, Hamburg, Germany and with the HERA project on proton machines. He then moved to Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste in Italy and was involved in the design and commissioning of the Elettra synchrotron light source eventually being its Technical Director until 2nd of July 2025 the day of the switching off Elettra in order to start the work of removal of the old machine to be replaced by Elettra 2.0

He is the Director of the Elettra 2.0 Project the 4th generation diffraction limited Light Source that will replace Elettra. He is also the Elettra Cluster Coordinator with tasks of operating, upgrading and innovating the accelerator complex as well as promoting projects that are aiming to the advancement of Elettra. He has contributed also in the construction of the FERMI free electron laser being project leader responsible for building the electron beam transport and beam collimating and dump system.
