BrightnESS Workshop on "VAT exposure related to ESS Installations in Sweden"

Following the BrightnESS Best Practice workshop that was held two weeks ago on "Detailing the European Spallation Source In-Kind Installations" and in support of a recommendation by the ESS Administration and Finance Committee, a one day workshop focusing on VAT exposure during In-Kind installation took place was in Lund on the 5th July. 
 
This fourth BrightnESS workshop covered the topic of "VAT exposure related to ESS Installations in Sweden" where Value Added Tax on installation activities in Sweden of In-Kind contributions were discussed by the ESS, local tax authorities and Partners that have such activities planned. 
The workshop aimed to clarify some of the complexity of potential VAT risks related to In-Kind installations and permit the sharing and deeper understanding of possible VAT risks which In-Kind Partners may face in Sweden and provide In-Kind Partners with general information regarding the steps they need to take to evaluate their own tax liability in Sweden.

The workshop was organised to share general VAT related information by the ESS, discuss the installation schedule and activities, present a general introduction to VAT and VAT exemptions and pass on information regarding Swedish VAT regulations. The event was organised with ample time for discussions and allowing Partners to share their situations and foster an understanding of obligations to be handled by the In-Kind contributors. 
Almost fifty invited people attended the workshop. The participants were administrative experts in project finance and taxes from all member countries.

BrightnESS is a European Union-funded H2020 project in which 18 European institutes and universities from 11 countries participate. The aim is to support the construction of the European Spallation Source (ESS; www.esss.se) in key technical areas and in-kind coordination. ESS is a multi-disciplinary research centre based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. This new facility will be up to 100 times brighter than today's leading facilities. The H2020 grant provides resources for the development, testing and optimisation of ESS’s state-of-the-art technologies. It also supports the research infrastructure to move from its initial planning phase to the implementation phase, as well as to maintain alignment between the physical construction of the site and the development and delivery of vital equipment and components.
