Tailored boron‑nitrogen‑carbon 2D layers

The chemical composition and interaction strenght with the substrate of a 2D layer composed of C, B and N has been tuned by growing the heterostructure on different polycrystalline metals (Pt, Ni, Fe) at different temperatures. The layer grown on Pt has been transferred on a SiO2/Si substrate by a simple electrolytic delamination. The chemical composition and interaction strenght with the substrate of a two-dimensional (2D) layer composed of C, B and N has been tuned by growing the heterostructure on different polycrystalline metals (Pt, Ni, Fe) at different temperatures (1000 K and 940 K) from a single molecular precursor (dimethylamino borane). At 1000 K the obtained 2D layers were heterostructures with complementary h-BN and graphene (G) domains on all the investigated metal foils, but with different interaction strenght for each substrate. At 940 K instead, layers with variable composition, ranging from almost pure G to almost pure h-BN, were obtained on the different foils.
The h-BN-G heterostructure grown on the Pt foil at 1000 K was transferred on a SiO2/Si substrate by a simple electrolytic delamination. Furthermore we have observed a preferential intercalation of atmospheric gases under h-BN rather than G for the h-BN-G heterostructure grown on Pt and stored in air before the delamination process.
The samples have been grown and characterized at the CNR-IOM BACH beamline.
