Pump and probe scheme

The pump/probe spectroscopy is an analitical tecnique which is used to study a large class of phenomena. It enables to follow in real time the vibrational motions coupled to electronic transitions. It requires at least two ultrafast (sub-ps) beams.
In a pump probe experiment the sample is excited by one pulse train (pump) and the changes it induces are then probed by the second pulse train. By means of an optical delay line one can vary the relative delay between the pump and the probe pulses, in order to investigate dynamics of the process.

A pictographic representation of the pump/probe scheme is shown here:

The Ti:Sa seed laser and the FEL emission are naturally synchronized and overlapped, so it is necessary to use optimized optics capable of separating light by different wavelength. In order to vary the delay between the pump and the probe, an optical delay line is used.
