Recent years have witnessed impressive progress in accelerator-based light sources as well as in the spectroscopic equipment used to exploit their light.

Synchrotron radiation sources have wide tunability, as well as good flux and resolution, while higher harmonics generated from lasers have high brightness in VUV and extremely short pulses, making them suitable for time resolved and non-linear optical studies. Free Electron Laser (FEL) sources combine in one source high brightness, short pulses, and short wavelength. All operational FELs in the VUV and x-ray range are based on Self Amplified Stimulated Emission, which suffer from some fluctuation in the photon energy. Seeded FELs such as FERMI@Elettra avoid this difficulty, and additionally provide transform-limited temporal and spatial coherence, and variable polarization, as well as precise control of all the pulse parameters.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together prospective experts and users of synchrotrons, and FELs to discuss the state-of-the-art of the respective fields and the new opportunities opening up in atomic, molecular, and cluster physics and chemistry. These include high field physics, the study of ultra-dilute systems and time-resolved experiments.
