The Department of Oncology and Metabolism of the University of Sheffield (https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/oncology-metabolism) delivers world leading research and teaching in a dynamic and exciting research environment with access to world class facilities. We host a dedicated team of academic and clinical specialists, independent research fellows, postdoctoral research scientists and professional services staff. Research in the department is organised into four areas: cancer, bone disease, endocrinology and reproductive and developmental medicine. The Department offers a range of Postgraduate Taught and Research programmes related to these research themes. The Laboratory of Cyril Sanders is based in the Academic Unit of Molecular Oncology (AUMO) which is part of the Sheffield Cancer Centre and affiliated with the Sheffield Institute for Nucleic Acids (SInFoNiA). He has a long-standing interest in studying the biochemistry of viral and eukaryotic cellular replication proteins to understand the mechanisms of DNA replication and collaborates extensively with structural biologists

Role in the AntiHelix project
The laboratory will study the structure and function of the human PIF1 helicase. PIF proteins are conserved helicases with roles in many replication and genome stability pathways and there is some evidence that it can become critical for the survival of some tumour cells, under replication stress conditions.

Cyril M. Sanders
|
Cyril Sanders obtained his D.Phil from the University of York, investigating viral gene regulation by the papillomavirus E2 transcription factor with Prof. Norman Maitland as advisor. Following his D.Phil studies, he spent more than five years as a post-doctoral research fellow at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, USA, studying BPV DNA replication initiation. He returned to the UK in 2001 to take up a Lectureship in the former Institute for Cancer Studies at the University of Sheffield. Here he has developed an interest in the biochemistry of protein-DNA interactions and the mechanisms of DNA replication and genome stability. He works closely with structural biologists and has productive collaborations with Prof. Fred. Antson (University of York) and Prof. Elena Orlova (Birckbeck College London).
Within the AntiHelix consortium he has a role as supervisor of ESR8, member of the Supervisory Board, leader of Work Package 3 and co-organiser of a training course.
