Aim of the School

The Italian Society of Synchrotron Radiation (SILS) in collaboration with ELETTRA-Sincrotrone Trieste SCpA organizes in September 2022 the:XVI School on Synchrotron Radiation “Gilberto Vlaic”: Fundamentals, Methods and Applications

“The first seven editions of the School were organized by SILS at S. Margherita di Pula in Sardinia, the VIII at the Frascati Laboratory of the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics, the three following editions at Duino (Italy), then two editions were held in Grado (Italy) and the last two in Muggia (Italy). This edition of the school will be held in Muggia (Italy) from the 19 to the 30 of September, 2022. The school will be in presence. Muggia is a pleasant seaside resort town close to Trieste, where ELETTRA, the Italian 3rd generation synchrotron radiation facility, and FERMI, the new seeded Free Electron Laser source, are located”.

The on-line participation to the school is also foreseen.

The school is dedicated to the memory of prof. Gilberto Vlaic, who founded in 1990 the first SILS school held in Sardinia that was followed by biannual editions till 2017. Prof. Vlaic was one of the pioneers of the X-ray absorption spectroscopy and contributed significantly to its development and its multiple applications.

The School will give a general overview of the characteristics and potentiality of synchrotron radiation to graduated students and young researchers interested in its use. The emission of synchrotron radiation both from the storage rings and from free electron lasers, its properties, most of the experimental methods used, their fundamentals and applications in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, Material Science and Medicine will be illustrated. Data analysis sessions, as well as experimental training on some of the ELETTRA beam-lines, are also foreseen.

The lecturers will be well known scientists with long standing experience on the use of synchrotron radiation in each specific topic; the lectures will be given in English.

IUCr Fellowships

School applied for funds of the International Union of Crystallography to cover travel and subsistence costs for young scientists from developing countries. In the case funds are granted, they are going to be used according to the INTERNATIONAL UNION OF CRYSTALLOGRAPHY Scientific Freedom Policy Statement, here reported:

"The Organizing Committee of the SILS School shall observe the basic policy of non-discrimination and affirms the right and freedom of scientists to associate in international scientific activity without regard to such factors as ethnic origin, religion, citizenship, language, political stance, gender, sex or age, in accordance with the Statutes of the International Council for Science.”'

Additional information will be available on this web site as soon as possible.
