George "Georgios" Kourousias is a computational mathematician (Erdős no.4) leading the Scientific & Quantum Computing team (SciQC) of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste. He works as a researcher in various scientific initiatives since 2008.

He has been the Principal Investigator of 12 beamtime experiments in X-ray microscopy and has participated in over 70.

George has more than 100 publications in international peer reviewed journals including a highly-cited international patent on image compression.

He has participated in many multi-million euro EU projects at leading roles on data management and policy issues.

His research interests include X-ray microscopy, Quantum Computing, X-ray Fluorescence, spectroscopic X-ray imaging, CDI/Ptychography, and Compressive Sensing.

Alongside leading SciQC, George researches the theory and applications of Quantum Computing in scientific computing and at synchrotron & FEL facilities — in particular quantum computing for x-ray imaging and spectroscopy. Early studies on quantum optimisation for battery research and quantum computing in XRF analysis have since matured into quantum-native formulations for Computed Tomography (reconstruction, denoising and QUBO-based segmentation). He is a co-author of the Advanced Functional Materials review Synchrotron Radiation for Quantum Technology, a member of Trieste Quantum, and Research Associate of the Institute of Quantum Computing and Quantum Technology at NCSR Demokritos.

George has been involved in University teaching and consultancy for the private sector. He was in the founding and leadership team of the Trieste Chapter of Singularity University (2018-2024).
