MIUR International Project ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure)

The Project, included in the ESFRI roadmap since 2006, envisages the realization of a distributed infrastructure based on three sites located in Eastern Europe (Romania, Czech Republic, Hungary). ELI Preparatory Phase has been funded by the European Union with the support by 40 research institutions stemming from 13 countries. In 2009, the Steering Committee issued a mandate to Romania, Czech Republic and Hungary to jointly implement the ELI Project through the construction of an infrastructure distributed on 3 seats (pillars):
  1. ELI – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) in Magurele (Romania);
  2. ELI-Beamlines in Prague (Czech Republic);
  3. ELI – Attosecond Light Pulse Source (ELI-ALPS) in Szeged (Hungary).
The construction of the three pillars is entirely funded by EU structural funds.

At the end of the Preparatory Phase, the legal entity ELI – Delivery Consortium (ELI-DC) was set up. This is a Belgian right Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif (AISBL) with the participation, at present, of Romania, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany and Italy, created with the task of coordinating the three pillars and leading to the setting up of a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). The participation in ELI-DC is open also to other countries interested in the use of the infrastructure. The preparation of the formal documents and steps needed for the setting up of a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ELI-ERIC), initially planned for 2018, is presently in progress. The Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research delegated Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste to represent Italy in ELI-DC.

Other Italian public research institutions involved

CNR and INFN actively contributed to ELI Preparatory Phase. In 2012, INFN, CNR and Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste submitted to the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research a long term joint research proposal to be implemented through a coordinated commitment of the scientists from the three institutions. The objective consists in the development of know-how and in the attraction of purchasing orders for the realization of the three pillars.

Strategic objectives

The activities of the three Italian research institutions (CNR, INFN and Elettra Sicrotrone Trieste) involved, will include both design and development of instrumentation to be installed in the three ELI pillars as well as in house research to identify innovative solutions to technological problems to be transferred, upon appropriate scaling, to the ELI infrastructure.
