MIUR International Project SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East)

SESAME (acronym for Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) is an international project that aims to create a synchrotron light source in the Middle East. The members of the international organization which manages the project are: Cyprus, Egypt, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, the Palestinian Authority, and Turkey. The project aims to contribute to intercultural dialogue, as well as having scientific purposes. The laboratory is located in Allan (Jordan), about 35 km north-west of Amman.

The observers (apart from Italy: Brazil, Canada, China (People’s Republic of), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the European Union (EU), France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Kuwait, Portugal, Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America) contribute to the project with contributions in kind of various types: equipment, training, expert visits.

The leading Italian research institution for the international project supported by MIUR is INFN - National Institute for Nuclear Physics.

SESAME is an international organization modeled on CERN which includes, at the level of their governments, the Members above-mentioned.

Strategic objectives

Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste constructed the RF cavities.
Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste was heavily involved in the design and construction of a novel X-Ray detector for which INFN got financial support through the international project supported by MIUR.
