CNR and ILL: 20 years of fruitful collaboration


This year, the annual congress of the Italian Society of Neutron Spectroscopy (SISN, www.sisn.it) was held in Trieste in the framework of FisMat2017 - the Italian National Conference on the Physics of Matter (eventi.cnism.it/fismat2017) - from Wednesday, 4th to Friday, 6th October.
 
SISN is the scientific society of Italian neutronists, a large community of scientists using neutron techniques in their research. Neutron spectroscopy is a unique investigation tool for the structural and dynamic properties of materials. It is complementary to X-rays techniques, synchrotron radiation, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and is a test bench for theories and simulations of materials behaviour over a wide interval of scales, from the atomic scale to diagnostic imaging.
During the annual congress, a special session was held on Thursday, 5th October from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the scientific agreements signed between the Italian National Research Council and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL, www.ill.eu).
 
Based in Grenoble (France), the ILL is equipped with one of the most intense neutron sources in the world and is at the leading edge of neutron science and technology. The special session was opened by a welcoming address by Prof. Alberto Morgante, Director of the Istituto Officina dei Materiali of the Italian National Research Council (Trieste). After several scientific presentations, the meeting was closed by a FisMat2017 plenary talk held by Mark Johnson, Associate Director and Head of ILL Scientific Division, entitled “Italy and the ILL: two decades of successful collaborations”.
The celebrations finished with a dinner witnessing the presence of the ILL staff members, SISN members and the members of the Italian Synchrotron Radiation Society (SILS).

Francesca Natali - CNR-IOM at Institut Laue Langevin, “Italian activities at ILL”

In the evening of Wednesday, 4th October a group of participants at Fismat2017 and SISN congress visited Elettra Sincrotrone and Fermi laboratories.
