Bioeconomy and Bio-based Industry for the Rural Renaissance of Regions (3BiR3)

Trieste, 23-24 May, 2019

3BiR3, a conference on bioeconomy and bioindustry organised by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Authority, aimed at discussing the reconciliation of the future availability of food with a simultaneous sustainable industrial exploitation of biotic resources, at the same time guaranteeing environmental protection.
The hall of the palace in Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste hosted scientists and European policy-makers responsible for the implementation of bioeconomy.

The study days allowed all participants to learn about the positions of the universities of Trieste and Udine, the competence of Elettra‐Sincrotrone Trieste and the Fvg Agrifood & Bioeconomy Cluster Agency. Specifically, the focus meeting saw the participation from scientists and administrators in charge of the implementation of bioeconomy policies in various European regions, with a strong central and eastern Europe representation.

The programme also included a few debates designed to show how advanced science and research can be effective drivers for the redevelopment of rural areas, also through the positive example of the Italy – Austria 2014 INTERREG project – 2020 InCIMA (Smart Characterization of Smart Materials), which boasts a network of partners such as Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (FHS), and the University of Salzburg.
Elettra was represented by the speeches of Ms. Cristina Modolo (Industrial Liaison Office), Ms. Lisa Vaccari (InCIMA project), as well as Mr. Nicola Cefarin (InCIMA project).
