Professor Fulvio Parmigiani was awarded the 2019 Elettra Fellow title. This title is attributed every year to internationally-renowned scientists by the Board of Directors of Elettra – Sincrotrone Trieste.
The Professor is a distinguished physicist who has given fundamental contributions to the field of laser-based spectroscopies devoted to the study of complex condensed matter systems.

In over 50 years of a long career, Fulvio Parmigiani has been teaching a number of courses, including Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Atomic and Solid State Physics, Optics, Quantum Optics, Advanced Spectroscopies and Photonics. His teaching contributed to the growth of many new generations of Physicists and Scientists over the decades. He supervised many Students, PhD and Post-Docs who became affirmed scientists throughout the world. After a few years as a Full Professor at the Polytechnic of Milan, he moved to Brescia where he started the Degree Programme of Physics at the Catholic University. He finally moved to Trieste as a Full Professor, where he also become Director of the Physics Department.
(ph. M. Goina)

At Elettra – Sincrotrone Trieste he developed a new beamline for the investigations of the magnetic properties of solid-state systems. Years later, in Trieste the professor could finally realize his long-sought dream, namely, the realization of an X-Ray laser, under the form of the Free Electron Laser (FEL) FERMI. This machine is worldwide the FEL more closing resembling the concept of a laser, because of the feature of the seeding, he strongly promoted. FERMI has been an extremely successful development, in terms of performances and scientific outcomes, delivering fully coherent EUV and soft-X-ray femtosecond light pulses and Fulvio Parmigiani was its first Scientific Director for the years 2003-2015. In parallel, he developed the T-ReX Laboratory, which is nowadays the Facility for table-top laser-based ultrafast spectroscopies at FERMI.

In this Laboratory he conducted fundamental studies on the out-of-equilibrium properties of complex materials, including high-critical-temperature superconductors, topological insulators and magnetic materials, investigated by optical and photoelectron spectroscopies. Through his fundamental contributions to Elettra and FERMI over the last years, by providing invaluable advice in many areas of development and by conducting pioneering experiments, Professor Fulvio Parmigiani has greatly contributed to the success of our organization.
