The Italian contribution to the construction of the linac for the European Spallation Source


European Spallation Source (ESS) building: ESS will be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons. A genuine pan-European facility, it will serve a community of 3,000 researchers across many areas of science and technology.



The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), a multi-disciplinary research facility based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. The construction of the facility began in the summer of 2014. Scientists and engineers from more than 100 partner laboratories are working on updating and optimising the advanced technical design of the ESS facility, and at the same time are exploring how to maximise its research potential. These partner laboratories, universities and research institutes are also contributing human resources, knowledge, equipment, and financial support through In-Kind Contributions. Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is one the Italian Institutions, together with Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), committed to the realization of the Italian in-kind contributions.

Elettra contributions are concentrated on the proton accelerator and more specifically they concern the construction of the conventional iron-dominated electro-magnets and related power converters to be installed in the superconducting part of the linac and in the High Energy Beam Transport (HEBT), the RF power stations for the superconducting spoke cavity linac section and the wire scanner acquisition system for the beam diagnostics.
