Processing of natural stones for architectural and furnishing projects

marmo cucina

As part of sustainability concept, there is a great interest in exploiting marble powder dispersed in appropriate polymers for further use in 3D printing. The main challenge is to explore how these components mix and find out which are the main variables into play.

Wood Processing

wood

Wood can be carbonized by controlled thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) to form a monolithic carbon surface for aesthetical or technological purposes. Wood with carbonized surfaces can also be used for interior decoration. Despite the marketing potentials, these carbonized products have not yet been characterized for the aforementioned applications, both morphologically and chemically.

Manufacturing of polyethylene products

Danplsat

Food packaging is generally based on polythene (PE) virgin materials. Danplast is developing a new material that will include recycled PE granules into the material composition for food packaging, as a way to reuse and recycle it. The main challenge is to optimize PE film production strategies to obtain a recycled polymer suitable for food-packaging applications, having morpho-chemical characteristics competitive with the virgin material.

New polymers and formulations from non-edible biomasses

biomasse

Since 2015, the company AEP Polymers has worked on the usability assessment of different lignin grades in polymers, like polyurethane foams for automotive and construction applications (thermal and acoustic insulation). To increase lignin efficiency and improve performance properties of the foams, AEP has explored a process to overcome the limitations of lignin as a solid powder, obtaining an easier-to-use lignin form and a more homogeneous ligninpolyurethane matrix.

New lubricants

Nuovi lubrificanti

Lubricants are a fundamental component of mechanical systems, reducing friction between moving parts.
The ensuing chemicophysical reactions have the potential to change the nature of both mechanical components and lubricants. Pressures may reach extremely high levels, possibly several GPa. The effect of such pressures on insulating materials may be to produce very intense electric fields capable of locally generating a plasma. Read more...

Catalysis in real time

Catalisi in tempo reale

Catalysts are defined as substances that cause chemical reactions to proceed more rapidly and simply while themselves remaining unchanged at the end of the reaction. Industry makes wide use of them to produce consumer products such as pharmaceuticals, plastics, fuels and fertilisers. Effective catalysts can help to produce energy savings, safer industrial processes and diminished environmental impact.

Biocatalysis for industry

Biocatalisi per l'industria

In order to promote the economic exploitation of biomass and agroindustrial by-products, such as sugars, cellulose, starch and oils, new biocatalytic processes involving enzymatic catalysts are under study.
These processes are often not competitive with those of classic chemistry because of the poor efficiency of the biocatalysts currently available. Read more...
