On Thursday, February 2 2023, Prof. Harry Westfahl Jr., Director of Brazil's National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), visited Elettra where he presented the webinar 'Sirius: A New Era for Latin American Science with a Fourth-Generation Storage Ring' providing an overview of the project, experimental capabilities and scientific opportunities offered by Sirius, highlighting its use in biological, hierarchical and condensed matter systems research.
After a round table discussion with Prof. Alfonso Franciosi, President and CEO of Elettra, during which Elettra 2.0 and FERMI 2.0 projects were illustrated, Westfahl visited the Elettra and FERMI experimental halls guided by Lisa Vaccari - Head of the SISSI infrared microscopy and spectroscopy beamline, Claudio Masciovecchio - Head of FERMI's time-resolved experimental techniques, Silvano Lizzit - Head of the SuperESCA beamline and Luca Gregoratti - Head of ESCAmicroscopy beamline.
The exchange at Elettra follows an intense day of presentations at the Brazilian Embassy in Rome yesterday in collaboration with the International Italo-Latin American Organisation - IILA, entitled "The Sirius particle accelerator: new instruments for the study of complex materials".
The event, moderated by Prof. Ezio Bussoletti, was attended by Prof. Franciosi, Helio Ramos - Brazilian Ambassador to Italy, Malta and San Marino, Antonella Cavallari - General Secretariat of the Italian-Latin American Organisation (IILA), Dr.. ssa Cinzia Giannini - President of the Italian Society of Synchrotron Light and Director of the Institute of Crystallography of the National Council for Research (CNR), Salvatore Mele - Senior Advisor for Relations with Latin American Countries of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), Prof. Atish Dabholkar - Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and Dr. Raffaella Geometrante - Director General of Kyma (Trieste), a spin-off of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.
The main objective of the initiative was to acquaint the Italian scientific community with the SIRIUS particle accelerator inaugurated in 2018, to promote greater dissemination of its potential by increasing academic exchanges between Brazilian researchers and researchers based in Italy.
