On February 10, 2023, Elettra welcomed a group of over 55 participants to '2023 ICTP Winter College on Optics: Teraherz Optics and Photonics'.
The ICTP Winter College on Optics is a two-weeks activity which every year exposes researchers from developing countries to important topics in the field of Optics, Lasers and their applications. Miltcho Danailov, Senior Researcher leading the Elettra Laser laboratory, has been collaborating for many years with the ICTP local organizer Joe Niemela on the program.
This year the college covered many aspects of Terahertz Optics and Photonics and was the occasion to visit both Elettra and FERMI, with emphasis on the beamlines SISSI and TeraFermi, where the scientific research lines are strongly related to the College topic.

Before the visit to the laboratories, students attended the lecture ‘THz studies at Elettra and FERMI’ by Andrea Perucchi, Head of the TeraFERMI beamline. The lecture treated basic aspects of Synchrotron Radiation and Free-Electron-Lasers with a special emphasis on the Terahertz spectral range. An overview of the Terahertz scientific activities at both Elettra and FERMI was provided through the discussion of some selected applications related to superconductivity and Dirac materials.
Participants were accompanied by Stefano Cleva, Electronic Engineer involved in controls, diagnostics and electromagnetic simulation and design activities, Simone Di Mitri, Senior Scientist at Elettra, Marco Zangrando, Head of the Photon Beamlines and Diagnostics systems of FERMI, along with Danailov and Perucchi. The Elettra Exhibition area, the SISSI beamline, the FERMI experimental hall and the TeraFERMI beamline were visited and the students followed the researchers’ explanations with great interest and had the chance to deepen some technical and practical aspects.
