A series of meetings with entrepreneurs from Friuli Venezia Giulia and the award to the researcher Diana Eva Bedolla Orozco within the inauguration of the Honorary Consulate of Mexico in Trieste.

Diana Eva Bedolla Orozco, physicist researcher at Elettra, has received the Mexicanos Distinguidos 2022 award for her professional career.
The award is given annually by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME), to Mexicans with a distinguished career residing continuously for at least five years outside the national borders. In 2022, the IME wanted to give this award to nationals who have distinguished themselves for their careers in the fields of science and technology, based on the United Nations guidelines, to promote and encourage the increase of women participating in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers (STEM).

The award ceremony was held at the Miela Theatre on the April 17th, 2023, with the presence of the Ambassador of Mexico to Italy, Carlos García de Alba, the Honorary Consul in Trieste, Graziano Bertogli, the President of the Global Network of Qualified Mexicans Abroad, Elisa Díaz, and members of the Mexican community residing in Trieste and in the north-western region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The event was organised on the occasion of the official inauguration of the Honorary Consulate of Mexico in Trieste attended by the Consul General of Mexico in Milan, Maria de los Ángeles Arriola Aguirre, with jurisdiction in northern Italy.
The day opened with a series of meetings, also attended by the President of the Mexican Synchrotron Light Society Mayra Cuéllar-Cruz and Vice-President Abel Moreno, with entrepreneurs from Friuli Venezia Giulia at the Chamber of Commerce.
The Mexican Synchrotron Light Society (SMLS A.C.) promotes and facilitates the use of synchrotron radiation for fundamental and industrial research. In this context, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste has started a cooperation with the Mexican scientific and diplomatic community to evaluate a possible investment by the Government of Mexico in Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste with the construction of an experimental station managed by the Mexican scientific community. This possible investment in Italy will allow the training of technical personnel to strengthen the Mexican scientific community in view of the future project to build a synchrotron source in Mexico.
"Science has taken me away from Mexico, but receiving this award makes me feel very close to home. Indeed, it is a great honor for me to be recognized by the Mexican community in FVG and the Mexican authorities. I hope I can be an example for other Mexicans to do science. Indeed, in all these years, I have worked hard to make a small contribution to scientific research, and I hope to be able to continue to do so in the future as well.” This was Bedolla's comment immediately after receiving the award.
Diana Eva Bedolla Orozco works at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste as a postdoc scientist of Area Science Park, at the SISSI-Bio beamline where she studies scientific questions (mainly biological) with infrared spectroscopy. In addition to planning and carrying out her personal research, she collaborates with users to define and optimize their scientific questions to be submitted to Elettra as a proposal, to then organize and carry out the experiments and analyse, publish and disseminate the scientific results. In particular, there is an interest in implementing and organizing the management of scientific data produced in our laboratory according to the guidelines and FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse).
She arrived from Mexico to Trieste after graduating in Physics with an ICTP scholarship for a two-year master's degree in complex systems, her studies continued with the PhD in neuroscience at SISSA which directed her research towards synchrotron techniques applied to a combination of applications (from X-rays to IR) concerning biology, chemistry, material sciences, medicine, which she has since then practiced at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste (also thanks to UniTS and Area Science Park) and in other laboratories around the world. In her next adventure, she will be managing a project conceived and formulated by herself. The project obtained the Marie Sklodowska Curie MSCA funding for three years to study frontotemporal dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases through vibrational spectroscopy, by establishing a collaboration also with ICGEB, Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) and Spedali Civili di Brescia.
