Workshop Alert 2016! (Press review)

Last generation accelerators at the service of research and industry: where do the latest technologies stand? And what do they hold in store for the future?

Scientists, experts and industries met to discuss these issues at the AdvancedLow Emittance Rings Technology (ALERT 2016) workshop, held in Trieste from September 14th to 16th and co-organized by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and by CERN in Geneva as part of the Eucard 2 Project.

The meeting was introduced by Alfonso Franciosi, President and CEO of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, and drew many participants from major research centers from around the world, equipped with a particle accelerator. Among these centres: SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) at Stanford University (USA), the Max IV Laboratory of the University of Lund (Sweden), CERN in Geneva (Switzerland) and the Elettra research center (Italy).

The significant turnout of representatives of a number of Italian and European industries specialized in high-tech production (such as, magnets, diagnostic systems and vacuum technologies, just to mention a few) was particularly important for an effective debate on the state of the art of research and the needs of increasingly specialized market niches. Moderated by Raffaella Geometrante of Kyma srl, a spin-off company of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste specialized in the design, production and characterization of accelerator components, the Friday afternoon session was specifically dedicated to collaboration with industry in this sector.

As the workshop organizers Emanuel Karantzoulis (Elettra) and Ioannis Papaphilipou (CERN) commented, "At this time of great advances in ultra-intense light sources, the sharing of experiences and technological solutions which have already beentested by laboratories that have recently gone into operation (such Max IV in Sweden) or are under construction (such as Sirius in Brazil and the ESRF-EBS in France) is a valuable resource for the scientific community, as well as - in general - for the development of knowledge and for finding answers to the global challenges of our time."
