Recent developments in multilayer optics
DESY, Hamburg, Germany
Abstract
4th generation light sources (free electron lasers) produce very intense, coherent x-ray light that is delivered in extremely short pulses. This development requires also advances in x-ray optics. I will describe our newly developed multilayer-based mirrors and optical elements that enabled efficient band-pass filtering, focusing and time resolved measurements in recent FLASH (Free Electron LASer in Hamburg) experiments. These experiments also prove valuable feedback on the response of the multilayer structures to high intensity, short pulsed sources, which are useful for designing optics and materials for future x-ray free electron lasers, such as LCLS or European XFEL. Additionally I will show progress on our new, modern coating laboratory that is being setup at DESY.
