Accelerator Activities at Argonne National Laboratory: The APS Upgrade and Beyond

Abstract
The Advanced Photon Source is undergoing a major upgrade to a multi bend achromat lattice with a reduction in the horizontal emittance down to about 40 pm. The new ring is planned to be installed in mid-2022. I will describe the progress on the APS-U and several of the accelerator physics and technology challenges of this machine. I will also describe several new accelerator R&D initiatives at Argonne contributing to next generation x-ray FELs.
