Abstract
Magneto-optic effects are large in surface photoelectron spectroscopies and can be conveniently measured. The sensitivity to the spectrum of a core-hole interacting with a spin-polarised valence band allows us to relate energy splitting values to the local exchange field, and obtain a relative surface magnetometer. Photoelectron diffraction experiments allow us to distinguish between surface and bulk core level spectra and therefore use the measured bulk splitting value as a gauge for putting on an absolute magnetometric scale results for surfaces, interfaces and surface alloys.
