X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the study of materials science

Abstract
X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies are in general related to the three aspects of the absorption discontinuities, viz. the chemical shifts, their near edge structure and the extended fine structure lying on the higher energy side. In the present talk I shall highlight how studies on chemical shift, carried out in our laboratory, have given very useful information on the effective charge, chemical bonding, band gap, etc. in a variety of compounds.
