Abstract
Carbon nanotubes, essentially rolled graphene tubes, are technologically important and scientifically interesting. We have carried out several investigations on pristine and metal filled tubes under high pressures. Our results show that the behaviour of single walled tubes depends significantly on the nature of stress. Metal filled tubes show either coincident phase transformations or suppression thereof depending on the inner structure of the walls and nanowires. In this talk an overall understanding obtained on carbon nanotubes as well as nano-crystalline silicon through experiments (several of which have been carried out at Elettra) will be presented.
