The Fermi RF Low Level Control System: Design, Capabilities, and Future Developments
Sincrotrone Trieste
Abstract
The Fermi Low Level RF control system (FLLRF) is a state of the art all-digital cavity control system designed at ST. It consisting of two boards, the RF Front End board (RFFE) and the Analog-Digital Board (AD). Meeting the demanding specifications of the FERMI FEL (pulse-to-pulse 3 GHz RF field stability of 0.1%, 100 mdeg on a 4.2µs pulse at 50 Hz) can not be done with even the best presently available hardware (mixers, amplifiers, and data converters) and required the development of novel DSP schemes for active cable and board calibration, noise reduction, and distortion cancellation. Since attaining the required specifications will be heavily dependent on the performance of the firmware a new approach is offered for its development and implementation.
