In search of materials for high-energy electrochemical storage: in situ investigations of the electrochemical interfaces.

Daniil Itkis
Chemistry Department, Moscow State University

Abstract
Although the development of science and technology in the last two decades allowed rather efficient storage of electric energy in modern lithium-based batteries, its specific energy and power are still far away from the needs of some industries (e.g. electric cars that are not able to compete with conventional ones due to low range on a single battery charge). High demand for efficient battery systems and other power sources forces the researchers to seek for new electrochemical systems but this way is hindered by the lack of understanding of elementary chemical and electrochemical processes occurring at the interfaces. Using one of the most promising power sources - lithium-air batteries - as an example it would be demonstrated how in situ observations of the operating electrochemical interfaces can help to advance this field.
