ESCA system in the MNC-Lab

The experimental UHV ESCALAB system:

  • modified VG Escalab II equipped with an X-ray source
  • UV-lamp
  • electron gun
  • LEED/Auger Specs

The listed instrumentation allow to perform electron spectroscopy investigations like XPS, UPS, EELS and Auger),

STMs in the MNC-Lab

Picture of the UHV (forward) and air (backward, in the tripode cage) STM systems available in the Micro-Nano-Carbon Lab. The UHV system is equipped with:

  • a load-lock chamber for fast entry of samples and tips;
  • a preparation chamber with Sputter-Gun, LEED, Manipulator Heating Stage (up to 900oC), Quartz micro-balance, custom made evaporators for metals and molecules.
  • an Omicron RT AFM/STM driven by APE-Research Electronics

The air system is an APE-Research mini-head (see more details at http://www.aperesearch.com/products.html) equipped with a low current preamplifier.

STM Micrographs
Examples of STM images obtained in the UHV System.

3D view of monoatomic steps of the Ag(111) surface. Terraces as large as 300 nm are found after extensive cycles of sputtering and annealing.

3D view of the atomically resolved Ag(111) surface. Image obtained with a tunneling current of about 2 nA and a sample bias voltage of 100 mV. The measured topographic corrugation is as low as 0.02 nm.

Constant current mode STM image of the 2H-TPP monolayer (30 pA, -400 mV), and of the unreconstructed Ag(111) (2 nA, +90 mV) with atomic resolution (upper-right inset). The two diagonals of the square molecular lattice are aligned to the [110] and [112] directions as indicated.

Examples of STM images obtained in the air system (mini-head - APE Research).

Constant current mode STM image of a Cu-Pc sub-monolayer (50 pA, 500 mV). The solution containing the molecules was drop-casted onto a freshly cleaved HOPG substrate.
