Beamlines
The upgrade to a diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR) will significantly enhance the capabilities of nearly all X-ray techniques currently utilized at Elettra, with particular benefits for experiments that depend on coherence, beam collimation, and precise focusing. The increased coherent fraction will greatly improve phase-contrast tomography and lensless imaging methods such as ptychography. Furthermore, the ability to focus the beam down to micron-scale dimensions while maintaining exceptional collimation will enable the study of proteins that only form micro- and nanocrystals.
Another notable advantage of this upgrade is that the improvements extend well beyond the increase in brightness. Advances in photon source technology, paired with innovations in downstream components such as X-ray optics, detectors, and IT infrastructure, will further elevate the capabilities and flexibility of the facility.
The table below outlines the beamline portfolio and the range of photon energies available across the various beamlines.
