SISSI-Mat offline

Welcome to the SISSI-Mat offline Laboratory

The SISSI-Mat infrared Laboratory at Elettra uses conventional sources ranging from the Far-Infrared to the Near-IR and up to the visible to for performing spectroscopy, microspectroscopy and imaging. The applications cover a wide range of research fields, including surface and material science, plasmonics, cultural heritage, forensics, microanalysis, geosciences, high-pressure IR studies, and more.

SISSI-MAT is operated by CNR-IOM personnel and strongly interacting with the twin Laboratory of SISSI-Bio. The lab is equipped with a VERTEX 70v spectrometer coupled to a Hyperion-2000 infrared microscope for spectroscopy and spectromicroscopy measurements over the whole spectral range. The possibility to mount different detectors as well as beamsplitters allows exploiting a diffraction limited beam from the visible down to the terahertz. The machine is also equipped with a cryostat and a diamond anvil cell, thus permitting to explore the behavior of matter at extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. For such applications and specific setups it is mandatory to contact the local contacts well in advance in order to schedule and prepare the experimental setup.

Proposal Submission

From the second semester 2025, SISSI-Materials offline will be open to users. Access to the laboratory will be granted according to the consolidated peer-review competitive research scheme. We invite users and collaborators to discuss their proposals with the laboratory local contacts well in advance before the submission deadline. This is crucial for improving the proposed experimental plan, both in terms of instrument selection and sample prepration.

Call for proposals

The deadline for offline facilities proposal submission is to be announced.
The  submission of proposals for the Elettra beamlines is suspended until Elettra 2.0 is commissioned.

SISSI-Mat Offline Installation

The Lab has moved from the Ring to an offline Space where we can perform all the Standard FTIR Spectroscopy studies by using the conventional sources. We ask the users to contact us for any particular request or any application that is not strictly standard, in order to set up the instrument for the specifi needs. This is even more important for FIR analysis where we possibly have to use a bolometer detector and for studied which involves in situ depositions, heating, LN cooling etc.

Collaborations - returning proposals

Due to the different environment as compared to our "stanrdard" Synchrotron-online operations and the nature of the offline-works we have noticed that a non negligible part of the proposal have seen the necesity of multiple runs to cover the entirety of the projects. In these cases we are open to discussion for collaborating on multiple.run proposals and we invite to be extremely clear about the purpose and expected results of the proposal(s).
