PROTEO aims to implement a specialized center for efficient production of recombinant proteins, profiting of the shared expertise of the Partnership. The center will be validated by a number of projects focused on basic and applied cancer research. On a long term, the aim will be to provide an innovative, highly-technological and wide-ranging service to institutions and industries, that required recombinant proteins for research and development in different fields (biomedical, pharmaceutical, food and environmental sciences), increasing productivity and competitiveness of the program-area. The synergy derived from the partnership collaboration will also contribute to start a training program that will meet the needs to form new professionals in biomedicine and biotechnology, with interdisciplinary and cross-sectors skills.

The planned activities are:

• set up a protein production platform to express and purify proteins in bacteria, insect and mammalian cells;
• produce and derivatize proteins of therapeutic relevance as antibodies, biomarkers and cancer drug's target;
• study proteins that are involved in the control of cellular proliferation processes (autophagic mechanisms, DNA replication and cell signalling);
• educate scientific personnel specialized in basic and applied research.

The expected results are:

• create a joint infrastructure for production of recombinant proteins;
• produce innovative tools for oncologic diagnostics;
• create a network of interdisciplinary skills for education;
• improve the exchange of scientific ideas on the therritory.

On the long term, the center will be able to offer an innovative service, highly technological and of broad profile, opened to the needs of institutions and industrial entities of the Program-Area that use proteins for research and development in biomedicine, pharmaceutics, agro-food and environmental, increasing productivity and competitiveness.
