Safety in Chemical Labs

Ensuring safety in all laboratory operations is a fundamental priority at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.
The Chemical Lab 1, Chemical Lab 2, and the Battery Lab are established and operated in compliance with the applicable national and international safety regulations. Such measures are adopted to ensure the protection of researchers, personnel, and visitors, as well as to guarantee that scientific activities are carried out in a safe, responsible, and efficient manner.

Commitment to a Safe Working Environment
All laboratory spaces are equipped with fume hoods to control potential exposure to chemical vapors or particles.
Each workspace is regularly inspected and maintained to guarantee the safe functioning of critical systems such as vacuum pumps, exhaust lines, and gas cylinders.

Training and Access Control
Access to the Chemical Labs is strictly limited to authorized and trained personnel only.
Before entering or working in any of the labs, all users must complete safety training that covers:

• Proper use of laboratory equipment

• Chemical hazard identification and labeling

• Safe handling and storage of solvents and reagents

• Emergency procedures and spill response

• Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements

This training ensures that all researchers are aware of potential hazards and capable of acting responsibly under both normal and emergency conditions.
 

Emergency Preparedness

Safety is a priority in all laboratory activities. Each laboratory is equipped with fire extinguishers and spill response kits, while evacuation routes and emergency signage are clearly displayed throughout the facilities. Regular emergency drills are conducted to ensure that all users are familiar with safety procedures and can respond quickly and effectively in the event of an incident.
