Central Address Book Directory (LDAP)

It is possible to get address autocompletion in your email client when composing an email, by using the Elettra central Address Book Directory.

This directory is based on a standard called LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol).

Follow this instructions to configure your email client (here only Mozilla Thunderbird is displayed, but you can use the data for other applications like Apple Mail.
  • Open Mozilla Thunderbird
  • In the top menu bar, click on the AddressBook button button. The Address Book window appears.
  • Open the File menu and select New > LDAP Directory...

  • Enter this data in the window:
    • Name: MARCoNI-Z (this is an example, feel free to select a different name)
    • Hostname: abook.elettra.eu
    • Base DN: ou=people,dc=elettra,dc=eu
    • Bind DN: uid=name.surname,ou=people,dc=elettra,dc=eu (please be sure to use your Name and Surname instead of name.surname in the example)
      • (for CERIC-ERIC you can use uid=name.surname,ou=people,dc=ceric-eric,dc=eu)
    • Use secure connection (SSL): checked (this changes the port to 636)

  • After confirming with "OK", do a search in the search area top-right of the Address Book. Thunderbird will ask you for your password. We recommend to save it in Thunderbird to use the autocompletion. Consider using a Master Password (if you don't save your password, Thunderbird will continue asking for it at every search).
  • Now, switch to the main Thunderbird window. Open the "hamburger" menu (the three horizontal lines top right of the Thunderbird window) and select Preferences > Preferences (Options > Options in some versions):

  • Select "Composition", then the "Addressing" tab and choose "Directory Server: MARCoNI-Z" as in the following screenshot:

We recommend not to select "Automatically add outgoing e-mail addresses to my Collected Addresses"

  • You're done! Compose an email and you'll see the email addresses appear while you type the names.
