Little Manual of the SAXS-beamline

1. BEGINNING OF THE MEASURING SESSION

Checklist:    ! follow carefully point after point !

  1. Switch on the two vacuum pumps at the sample stage and open SLOWLY the two yellow hand valves. At least 10 mbar have to be achieved! For this the valves must be completely opened!

  2. Set the X-ray interlock of the experimental hutch.

  3. Open valves and shutters using the program RW_BCS1.VI. Therefore, press the OPEN BL button, which then will display "OPEN". Now initiate the process of opening the beamline by activating the program (press "=>" in the upper left corner).

The valves and shutters open in the following order:
  1. photon shutter 1    ! should be opened first to thermally equilibrate the monochromator !
  2. gate valve 3b        ! can be openend ONLY if you first switched on the vacuum pumps of the experimental station !
  3. gate valve 8 keV    (or 5.4 or 16 keV, if you use that energy)
  4. photon shutter 2    ! this is our secondary beam shutter, thus it can be opened ONLY after the X-ray safety interlock (point 2) is set  !
  5. front end stopper   (see point 4)
  6. front end shutter    (see point 4; common main beam shutter)
  1. Shutters e) and f) can only be opened, if one is set into Experiment. This duty is taken over either by you, or by the Diffraction Beamline, which is underneath the SAXS station (if both parties are present). In case you are the first at the experiment, you should set yourself into Experiment (use the RW_BCS1.VI program) and then open e) and f) as described in point 3. Then you MUST set yourself into Local again.

  2. Set the correct fine pitch of the second (upper) monochromator crystal. This is done by adjusting manually the voltage in the range from 0-90 in the program  Piezo-adjust-v22.vi ( subwindow of program Main-Piezo.vi). Further, we strongly recommend to check the fine pitch from time to time in order to stay with the highest possible photon flux.  ATTENTION: you can do this ONLY when the detector is measuring, or if the fast shutter is permanently open !

  3. For the detectors check that you allways stay  below the saturation limit (if necessary, you have to insert more aluminum foils to attenuate the beam:
  1. 1D-Gabriel detectors: check that the integral number of counts does not exceed 50 kHz and the countrate per channel does not exceed 1000 Hz !
  2. CCD camera: stay below 65536 (16 bit) cts/ pixel !
  3. Image Plate: stay below 65536 (16 bit) cts / pixel !
  4. Pilatus detector: stay below  1 000 000 cts / s / pixel !
ATTENTION: if you switch detector, you also need to select the corresponding fast-shutter connection !

2. END OF THE MEASURING SESSION

Checklist:    ! follow carefully point after point !

1.   Close valves and shutters using the program RW_BCS1.VI. For this, press the CLOSE BL button, which displays CLOSE then.
Now initiate the process of closing the beamline by activating the program (press "=>" in the upper left corner).

The valves and shutters close in the following order:
                         photon shutter 1
                         photon shutter 2
                         gate valve 8 keV
                         gate valve 3b
(gate valves 1b & 2b will - and have to - remain always open !)

2.  Close the two yellow hand valves of the sample stage vacuum and turn off the two pumps.

3.  Leave the detectors and computers running, we will switch them off later.

4.  In case you are the last party at work at our front end, you have to set yourself into Experiment (use RW_BCS1.VI) to close first the front end shutter and then the front end stopper (with same program). Then you MUST set yourself into Local again (use RW_BCS1.VI), so that the front end stopper and front end shutter can be activated by the XRD-beamline staff below, in case they return before you!

5.  In case you are not the last party at work, check that you are set in Local and do not forget to inform the Diffraction Beamline (tel. 8355), that you leave now. They will take care then of the procedure of point 4.

6.  Lock the hutch exit door with the 'key Nr. 34 of the Control room beamline 5.2-SAXS". Bring this key Nr. 34  to the guard at the main exit and go home.

4. NO LIGHT ?

Don't worry, you are not the first one with this basic problem. Most probably you will solve it on your own following the advice given in 1.-8.

     1. Check the Ring-Parameters (D:\SAXS_BL.PRO\SIGRID\RINGPA1. VI), especially check the wiggler-gaps (22 mm is normal setting) and the ring current.

     2. Is the interlock set properly? The red & white light should be on.

     3. Are all shutters and valves open? The red blinking warning light should be on, if our secondary beam shutter (PHOTON SHUTTER 2) is open. Further check
the front end stopper and front end shutter, these may have been closed by the safety control system or by mistake from the Diffraction Beamline Users.

     4. Is the detector measuring (otherwise the fast-shutter remains closed !) ?

     5. In case you just changed the detector: did you also select  the corresponding fast-shutter connection ?

     6. Check the Intensity (compare with last value in program Piezo_adjust_v22.vi), and if necessary adjust the Fine Pitch of the second monochromator crystal.

     7. Does the light pass through your sample cell?

     8. Check your own state of mind: Are you very tired, stressed and have this particular zombie feeling, then you better go home, have a nice rest and check with
         our help tomorrow once again.

After you have gone through all points 1.-8. without any pleasing result, then please still refrain from calling us during night, unless your experiment has serious hope to win the Noble Price extremely soon (and we are mentioned on it).

5. OTHER TROUBLES ?

Problems with program RW_BCS1.VI or other LabView Programs, e.g. you want to open or close valves, but nothing happens?

Possible reason:
You did not activate the program by pressing the small white arrow  in the upper left corner, which thereafter turns black while the program performs the requested command.

6. EMERGENCY NUMBERS

Only, and ONLY, in case of a real emergency, you can get help by using the emergency phone numbers. You will find a list of these numbers on the wall next to the telefon.

But please refrain from calling unless you have studied in detail all previous pages of this manual, and still did not find the answer to your problem !!!

7. UNATTENDED BEAMLINE

Before going away for dinner or sleeping:

In case you want to leave the beamline open, and your experiment running, then please fill out the on-line form (as shown below) for

unattended beamline operation, and send this electronic form to the ELETTRA control room.

8. BEFORE RETURNING HOME

In general we expect, that you will leave the beamline and also the chemistry lab as you found it!

Please, check therefore the following points:
  • Clean up all benches you worked at

  • Put all full waste paper baskets in front of the stairs, ouside of the hutch, so that the cleaning women can empty them.

  • Remove all your samples and do not leave anything in the fridge: NEITHER FOOD, BEVERAGES NOR SOLUTIONS/SAMPLES!!

  • Put all used tools, sample holders (clean) etc. at their place

  • Copy your protocol and take it home

  • Backup all your data and take them home

  • Optional: broom the floors, if you made a mess

  • THANKS A LOT!!
