Single shot 3D imaging

The 3D map of an isolated object is obtained impinging simultaneously with two “twin” EUV FEL pulses from different directions. This new technique was designed on DiProI taking advantage of novel data analysis algorithms developed in collaboration with the Scientific Computing Team (SciComp).

Single shot 3D imaging

The simultaneous illumination led to two diffraction patterns containing the light scattered by the object and by reference structures (pinholes and a slit) purposely realized into the sample, straightforwardly providing holographic images of the sample from the two different view angles.

This information starts a coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) reconstruction, providing two independent and high resolution (sub-100 nm) views of the sample.

Combining these images in an ad-hoc developed algorithm, based on ray tracing and on the physical constraints of the illumination geometry, the 3D stereoscopic rendering of the object is retrieved.

The 3D image can be collected within a single FEL pulse, allowing to capture even very fast events (the FEL pulse duration is as short as a few 10s of fs), possibly circumventing the issue of radiation damage.
