NanoESCA and its users

The NanoESCA attracts a group of researchers working in the fields of materials science, surface physics and magnetism. From January 2012 NanoESCA beamline was opened to Elettra general users. We invite everyone and in particular new users to browse through our publication list and to discuss their proposals with the beamline local contacts well in advance before the submission deadline.


NanoESCA beamline explores the interrelations between electronic structure and physical properties like magnetism and magnetic phenomena, e.g. by applying synchrotron radiation techniques such as XMCD, XPEEM, photoelectron momentum mapping. Our highlights section shows examples which illustrate the capability of photoelectron microscope.


A typical workflow for the analysis of an unknown sample profits from all three operations modes of NanoESCA photoelectron microscope finding answers to three questions:
• Where are the interesting features?
• Which elements are there and how much of them?
• What is the elemental map and chemical bonding?

In house research

NanoESCA beamline is lead by Prof. Claus Michael Schneider (Forschungszentrum Jülich, Peter Gruenberg Institute (PGI)). At the PGI FZ Julich pursues basic research in the area of nanoelectronics, combining research, technological development and innovation device concepts. In its application-oriented research, the PGI realizes ideas for technological innovation. The search for alternatives includes research  on the magnetic properties of electrons in order to exploit their spin as information units (spin electronics). Investigations are also under way to explore how biomolecules or quantum effects can be used for information processing.
