Civil Engineer for the Elettra 2.0 Project
Deadline: 31 August 2025Ref: SA/25/19
Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.0/2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source (Elettra), a new free-electron laser light source (FERMI) and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machines and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific and technological interest. In order to allow the laboratory to remain competitive in the next 20 years, an entirely new source - Elettra 2.0 - belonging to the new generation of storage rings (DLSR or Diffraction Limited Storage Ring) is being developed. The new source will exhibit a major increase in the brilliance and coherence fraction of the photon beams. The Elettra 2.0 optics is based on our enhanced symmetric six bend achromat structure (S6BA-E) with a 12-fold symmetry and an emittance of 200 pm-rad at 2.4 GeV. The new structure creates also straight sections in the arcs permitting the installation of additional insertion devices, thus increasing the number of beamlines. Existing beamlines will have to be upgraded and new beamlines developed to take full advantage of the characteristics of Elettra 2.0. The new machine is scheduled for commissioning in the second half of 2026. See http://www.elettra.eu for more information.
The successful candidate will be part of the Civil Engineering Team working on modifications of existing buildings and related appurtenances and external areas, including those necessary for the new Elettra 2.0 machine currently in the construction phase.
He/she will participate and work in the management and ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of the existing buildings on the company premises, inculding offices, laboratories, technical and/or service rooms, roads, green areas, external installations, sewerage system, etc..
He/she will support the Civil Engineering Team in the definition and design of new implementations as well as changes to the existing ones for what concerns both technical aspects such as reports, technical specifications, drawings, metric calculations, etc., and technical/administrative aspects, including tender specifications and documents, relations with institutions, etc. He/she will also collaborate to the construction supervision.
In the framework of the Civil Engineering Team, he/she will have management duties and carry out tasks that require specific preparation and professional skills, with discretionary powers and right of decision and independent initiative within the limits of the general directives given to him/her.
A Master degree in civil engineering or building engineering is required. Italian candidates should have obtained the degree according to the Italian university system prior to the DM (Ministerial Decree) 509/1999 reform or a corresponding class 28/S specialistic degree (LS) or a corresponding master's degree (LM) belonging to classes LM-23, LM-24 and LM-26 of the new system, according to the table annexed to the Interministerial Decree of 9 July 2009, published in the Italian Official Gazette of 7 October 2009, no. 233.
At least two years of experience in the civil engineering field is required, specifically in the design and/or construction and/or management and/or maintenance of building works and/or infrastructures, including on-site safety aspects. Good knowledge of yard accounting is expected. Experience and proficiency in design using CAD and in standard word processing and presentation software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) are expected.
The enrollment in the official register of italian professional engineers is an essential requirement. Good oral and written communication skills in English are also required.
Good time management skills and ability to prioritize are expected, together with the ability to interact with staff at all levels and to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
