Database developer for LEAPS-TECH Project
Deadline: 05 November 2026Ref: IA/26/33
Elettra - Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center offering international users access to synchrotron and free-electron laser radiation for the characterization and processing of matter. The extremely high quality of the light sources and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific and technological interest. In order to allow the laboratory to remain competitive in the next 20 years, an entirely new synchrotron radiation source - Elettra 2.0 - belonging to the new generation of storage rings (DLSR or Diffraction Limited Storage Ring) is being installed and will join the already operating free-electron source FERMI in the next months. The new source will exhibit a major increase in the brilliance and coherence fraction of the photon beams. The Elettra 2.0 optics is based on our enhanced symmetric six bend achromat structure (S6BA-E) with a 12-fold symmetry and an emittance of 200 pm-rad at 2.4 GeV. The new structure creates also straight sections in the arcs permitting the installation of additional insertion devices, thus increasing the number of beamlines. Existing beamlines are being upgraded and new beamlines constructed to take full advantage of the characteristics of Elettra 2.0. See http://www.elettra.eu for more information.
Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste recently received a Horizon Europe Grant under the HORIZON-INFRA-2025-TECH-01 call. The LEAPS Technology Roadmap implementation for enhancing competitiveness and innovation of Europe´s accelerator-based photon sources (LEAPS-TECH) Project involves 32 partners, including DESY, EuXFEL, HZB, INFN, SLS, SOLEIL and DIAMOND. LEAPS-TECH will deliver two core objectives: (1) strategic co-development of advanced technologies with highly specialized European industry and academia to ensure global competitiveness and (2) accelerating standardization and interoperability across LEAPS facilities to increase research infrastructure (RI) capacity and efficiency and reduce technological fragmentation. Seven technology work packages (WPs) spanning the entire LEAPS roadmap, from undulators, diagnostics, optics and detectors to sample environments for academia and industry including data management, form the heart of LEAPS-TECH, based on their potential for co-innovation, their ability to enhance European leadership and their urgency for advancing user science and services. Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is leader of work-package 4 and co-coordinator of work-package 5.
The aim of Work Package 5 (WP5), SEEQuality, is the development of standardized and quality-assured electrochemical cells and experimental procedures for synchrotron-based electrochemical studies. In this framework, the successful candidate will join the IT Department, ensuring that the LEAPS-TECH WP5 tasks runs efficiently and on schedule, in collaboration with the IT staff and the www.wayforlight.eu personnel.
Main duties of the database developer will be to:
- collect all requirements from the WP5 partners;
- implement modern web site usability and development techniques for both front end and backend including the support of databases;
- negotiate, with the assistance of the wayforlight.eu personnel the necessary changes;
- implement those changes in the wayforlight database and ensure they are correctly presented in the corresponding website;
- assist project colleagues and de-bug the system where needed;
- collect and draft documentation and contribute to the preparation of project deliverables, milestones and periodic reports.
A Bachelor in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related fields is required together with the following technical skills:
- minimum 3 years of experience in web development;
- in-depth knowledge of databases and SQL language;
- familiarity with javascript, php and python programming;
- experience in the development of web application software using modern frameworks.
Possession of a higher academic degrees (such as a Master) and documented experience in international projects will be considered preferential qualifications.
Good time management skills and ability to prioritize are expected, together with the ability to interact with staff and facility users at all levels and to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential
