Protein Biotechnology Research Associate at Elettra Ref. E/16/14
Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.0/2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. See http://www.elettra.eu for more information. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI – is currently under commissioning. See http://www.elettra.eu/lightsources/fermi.html for more information.
The Structural Biology Laboratory (SBL) applies molecular and structural biology tools to study the basic genetic processes within the cell and to characterize some of the proteins involved. We use protein crystallography to determine the atomic structure of these proteins, as well as biochemical and biophysical approaches to understand how they work. The research projects of SBL include the study of the molecular mechanism of regulatory proteins in cancer cell signaling and the investigation of their functional and structural elements for the rational design of novel inhibitors. A protein production platform for expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells has been recently implemented and serves as a facility to support internal and external research, including research for industrial applications. Many of the research projects are in collaboration with external laboratories and all activities are performed in a multidisciplinary environment with an open and collaborative attitude. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/labs/structural-biology for more information.
Job Description: The successful candidate will be employed in the set-up of a de-novo protocol for production and functional/structural characterization of recombinant proteins for industrially relevant commercial contract using insect and mammalian cells systems. He/she will be directly involved in the whole process from the initial construct design to protocol development. Functional and/or structural analysis will also have to be performed. The selected candidate will work in close collaboration with the other members of the SBL, with the beamline scientists of Elettra and with the scientists of the external client. |
Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent industrial experience in protein sciences (i.e. biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology or structural biology) is required, together with at least 5 years of relevant experience in biological research. A very solid experience in recombinant protein over-expression in insect cell and mammalian systems, in high-grade protein purification and in protein biochemical and biophysical characterization is essential, together with deep knowledge and technical expertise in at least two - and preferably more - of the following areas: structural biology, bioassay development, antibody sciences, research and development of bio-pharmaceutical products. Experience in protein quality assurance and in the production of high-quality grade proteins (GLP and GMP) is also required. |
