SISSI PostDoc Research Associate at Elettra ref. E/14/02
Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.0/2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. See http://www.elettra.eufor more information. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under commissioning. See http://www.elettra.eu/FERMI/for more information.
The SISSI infrared beamline at Elettra extracts the IR and visible components of synchrotron emission for performing FTIR spectroscopy and microspectroscopy in the entire infrared range, from THz to visible. The beamline is divided into two branches, differently equipped in order to cover the wide range of applications of infrared spectro-microscopy, including surface and material science, biochemistry, forensics, chemical microanalysis, geology, cell biology, biomedical diagnostics, microfluidics, high-pressures, conservation science, protein folding, chemical kinetics etc.
The research activities exploit the capabilities presently offered by the SISSI beamlinCareerse and further developments are planned to offer new imaging schemes and push the lateral resolution.
See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/elettra-beamlines/sissi.html for more information.
Job Description: The successful candidate will be involved in the activity of the life sciences branch of the SISSI beamline. In particular, he/she will be responsible for the development of microfluidic devices for live cell analysis under physiological conditions and for research programs aimed to improve FTIR microspectroscopy setups for life sciences with bio-analytical tools. He/she will collaboratewith the beamline staff and the users of the beamline in running SISSI beamline and further developing the capabilities of the life sciencesend station in order to accomplish the experimental program. |
Qualifications: The candidate should have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or related disciplines. Experience in some of the following fields is highly desirable: FTIR spectroscopy, FTIR microspectroscopy, laboratory practice of microfabrication techniques, chemometric approaches for data analysis, basic practice of biological laboratory methods and procedures, construction of scientific equipment relevant to synchrotron beamlines. Programming skills in R-environment and/or Matlab are an asset. |
The search will be opened immediately and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. The appointment envisioned is a Research Associate contract (contratto di collaborazione a progetto) of an initial 12 months duration. The salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the candidate.
