Cellular Biologist for GLIOMA PROJECT
Ref. E/11/10
Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under commissioning. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.
The Structural Biology Laboratory at Elettra is conducting a thriving research program, ranging from biochemistry and cell biology to structural analysis. In-house research focuses on proteins involved in fundamental biological processes with a strong relevance for tumor biology. Three research groups carry out independent research programs centered on eukaryotic DNA replication, genome stability and autophagy, with a number of overlaps and collaborations.
The GLIOMA project (Cup D35E11000600003) is an italo-slovenian initiative funded within the Cross-border Cooperation Programme Italy-Slovenia 2007-2013. The main aim of the GLIOMA project is to the search for targets for development of biopharmaceuticals to treat malignant glioma – glioblastoma initiating stem cells. The scientific program foresees experiments in the field of molecular and cellular biology to investigate the function of some of the newly discovered biomarkers and of the human RecQ helicases in brain tumor stem cells growth and proliferation on the basis of previous observations that linked RecQ helicases to various cancer predisposition disorders. These studies will provide new insight into novel and hopefully more efficient therapies for human brain gliomas.
Job Description: The successful candidate will work, in collaboration with the other members of the GLIOMA team, as well as with the staff of the Structural Biology Laboratory of Elettra, on the analysis of the function of newly discovered biomarkers and RecQ helicases in brain tumor stem cells. He/she will also participate in all of the seminar and research activities of the GLIOMA team and present his/her data at all the meetings that will be established to periodically discuss the progress in the GLIOMA project. |
Qualifications: University degree in biology, biotechnology, biomolecular medicine or industrial biotechnology and a PhD degree in a related field of biomolecular medicine are required. Post-PhD experience in cellular and molecular biology are requested. Experience in the glioblastoma and DNA damage repair field would be also an asset. Good communication skills in English and the ability to work productively in a team are essential. A working knowledge of the Italian language would be desirable, but is not required. |
The search will be opened on December 1, 2011 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. We will offer a "Consultancy Agreement-Contratto a Progetto" that will expire on October 31, 2014. The Applications should include full curriculum vitae and, if possible, the names and (electronic mail) addresses, telephone and fax numbers of three references. We thank all applicants in advance.
