E/15/34 High Pressure diffraction PostDoc Research Associate at Elettra
Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. See http://www.elettra.eu for more information. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI - is currently under commissioning. See http://www.elettra.eu/lightsources/fermi.html for more information.
The Xpress beamline at Elettra is a new facility dedicated to high pressure diffraction experiments using diamond anvil cells (DAC). The beamline is currently in the advanced stage of commissioning and will partially start operations from September 2015 onwards. The potential users of Xpress will belong to different communities including: condensed matter physics, chemistry, geophysics, material science, etc. The experimental station currently under development is based on a pin-hole scanning stage for defining the X-ray beam size, ruby fluorescence set-up, stages for holding different types of diamond anvil cells, and an area detector. The beamline has been developed in partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India. The research activities rely on the facilities of the Xpress beamline in the framework of the ELETTRA international Project (EST-Mat). See http://www.elettra.eu/lightsources/elettra/elettra-beamlines/xpress/welcome-page.htmlfor more information.
Job Description: The successful candidate will be involved in the structural study of materials at high pressure with angle dispersive XRD measurements. In particular he/she will participate to the study of phase transformations at Earth’s upper mantle pressures and temperatures of carbonates, hydrous silicates and sulphates/sulphides. He/she will collaborate with the beamline staff and users in running the experiments, participating to the in-house research activities and developing the high pressure facilities..

Qualifications: the candidate should have a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline. Proven experience in powder diffraction and in handling different diamond anvil cells are required. Experience in single-crystal diffraction is desirable, as well as capabilities in instrumental development. |
