Staff Scientist Position Spectromicroscopy Beamline at Elettra

Ref. E/11/08

Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under construction. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.

Elettra has very extensive programs in the field of microscopy operating several VUV/x-ray microscopy beamlines. The Spectromicroscopy beamline operates in the 20-300 eV photon energy range and hosts a low photon energy, scanning angle-resolved photoemission microscope. Research focuses on the study of the electronic structure of materials on the submicron scale in different fields, including materials science and solid state physics.

Job Description: We seek an experienced scientist who will contribute to the operation, optimisation, maintenance and upgrade of the Spectromicroscopy beamline and experimental station in order to meet the requirements of a broad user community. The successful candidate is expected to pursue collaborative research programs in a team-oriented environment, become involved in existing research collaborations and provide high-quality support to external users. He/she is also expected to be involved in generating proposals to suitable funding agencies and establish new research collaborations.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Physics or related field is required. Proven experience and a suitable publication record in synchrotron radiation photoemission and/or microscopy is required. Knowledge of angle-resolved photoemission is highly desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are essential, together with ability to work productively in a team. A working knowledge of the Italian language is highly desirable; knowledge of other languages is an asset.

The search will be opened on  October 5, 2011 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found or until December 31, 2011, whichever will come first. The appointment envisioned is a permanent research staff position at a level that will depend on qualifications. In the absence of sufficiently qualified candidates, after December 31, 2011, junior applicants might be considered for nonpermanent positions with contract type and salary commensurate with previous experience and qualifications.

Applications should include full curriculum vitae and, if possible, the names and (electronic mail) addresses, telephone and fax numbers of three references.

We thank all applicants in advance.
