Printer installation on GNU/Linux

The guide refers explicitly to the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX C5850i, the network multifuntional printers installed at Elettra, but can be used for other printers, properly changing the drivers.

The latest drivers for the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX C5850i can be downloaded from:

choosing one of the CQue Drivers depending on your specific needs (DEB, RPM, English, Italian...).

Install the package using the package manager tools of your Linux distribution to make the printer drivers available to your CUPS installation.

Printer installation using CUPS

Follow these instructions to install the printer in your linux system.

  • Open your preferred browser, type http://localhost:631/ and click on Administration

  • Select LPD/LPR Host or Printer as the protocol to use to communicate with the printer through the printer server, then click on the Continue button

  • Type lpd://print.elettra.trieste.it/XXX-printer in the Connection box, where XXX is the prefix of the printer queue that identifies the multifunctional device usually according to its location, then click Continue

  • Specify the Description and Location of the printer, if you need to. DO NOT share the printer. Click Continue to proceed...

  • Select Canon from the Make list, then click Continue...

  • Scroll down the huge list of available models until you find Canon iR-ADV DX C5840/5850 PCL. Select it and press the Add Printer button, then click Continue

  • Click on the Set Printer Options link and under the Options Installed:
    - choose Disabled for every option that doesn't have a drom down menu;
    - choose Cassette Feeding Unit-AQ1 for the Feeding Option;
    - choose Inner Finisher-L1 for the Finisher Option.
