Qualitative and quantitative phase analysis for industrial and environmental applications
Powder diffraction as an instrument for qualitative and quantitative phase analysis of highly relevant mixtures for industry and the environment.
The first workshop organised by the Instruments and Computation Committee of the Italian Crystallography Society has been a complete success, with 70 registered participants. The workshop was held in Milan on university premises (Università degli Studi). Organised in collaboration with Elettra and sponsored by Panalytical, Cisgem and Assing, the workshop was intended for graduating students, PhD students, technicians and researchers involved in qualitative and quantitative analysis and interested in industrial and environmental applications. It was also open to the participation of professionals working in the field or interested in this sector.

The main topics discussed were X-ray powder diffraction — both from theoretical and instrument points of view — the basic principles, the databases and software available for qualitative and quantitative phase analysis, as well as the strategies required in order to prepare a sample. During the second part of the workshop, alongside other techniques and issues, some possible applications were presented. Complex and highly relevant examples for industry and the environment were illustrated, revealing the multidisciplinary nature of crystallography's technical applications.
