Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and the University of Pisa has successfully held the second edition of the “Matter physics workshops at Sincrotrone”, an initiative that has implemented within the framework agreement between these two organizations. On 22 and 23 January 2019, a group of 13 students of the Master’s Degree in Physics in Pisa, with the Chairman of the course, Riccardo Mannella, and his colleagues, Simone Capaccioli and Elpidio Tombari, attended the two-day event, with lectures and workshops on condensed matter through the radiation of the two coherent light sources, Elettra storage ring and FERMI free-electron laser (FEL).

In this second edition, the program has been enhanced with teaching activities of many colleagues from Elettra (Maurizio Polentarutti, Sigrid Bernstorff, Francesco D’Amico and Alessio Turchet), FERMI (Carlo Callegari) and TUGraz (Barbara Sartori). After the first part focusing on thematic workshops on radiations generated by Elettra and FERMI sources and their possible experimental applications, students had direct experience with some research projects in these two large organizations. A whole day was devoted to practical workshops at XRD, IUVS, SAXS and DXRL beamlines, where students were involved in the implementation of an experiment in all its steps, from the preparation of the set-up to data collection and analysis.

The success of the second edition – as students were enthusiastic about the program and their professors expressed great appreciation – shows the importance of this initiative that will be repeated as an annual event pooling together the academic community and Elettra and Fermi beamlight sources. These events are fundamental to create increasing synergies between research organizations and universities and they are also fundamental to train young researchers who will access research with the skills that are required in the international scientific community.
