The 3rd BrightnESS Best Practice Workshop 'Detailing the European Spallation Source In-Kind Installations: Organisation, Plans and Support' took place on 19-20 June in Lund, Sweden. The ESS has started the installation phase of In-Kind contributions. The coming 18 months will see the culmination of years of work at many partner institutes as In-Kind contributions are shipped to the ESS construction site for installation. The installation phase at the ESS will be an important and intensely satisfying period for all concerned. It requires carefully planned actions, access to detailed information and configuration control, local support to partners and adhering to health and safety regulations. This was the topic of the 3rd Best Practice workshop.

BrightnESS is a European Union-funded H2020 project in which 18 European institutes and universities from 11 countries participate. The aim is to support the construction of the European Spallation Source (ESS; www.esss.se) in key technical areas and in-kind coordination. ESS is a multi-disciplinary research centre based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. This new facility will be up to 100 times brighter than today's leading facilities. The H2020 grant provides resources for the development, testing and optimisation of ESS’s state-of-the-art technologies. It also supports the research infrastructure to move from its initial planning phase to the implementation phase, as well as to maintain alignment between the physical construction of the site and the development and delivery of vital equipment and components.
