Free electron lasers: the latest light tech frontier

In the year that UNESCO has dedicated to light, about one hundred experts from across the globe were meeting in Trieste at an international conference in order to discuss free electron lasers: a cutting edge technology involving light that is currently disclosing new and unexpected scenarios in materials and life sciences.

The conference was organised by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, the research centre based in Area Science Park, Trieste, in collaboration with the Germany Desy research centre in Hamburg. Starting in 2010, Elettra has been operating FERMI - one of four active laser sources of its kind worldwide. Desy hosts the second.  

“Free electron lasers – said Marco Zangrando, in charge of organising the conference at Elettra -  produce incredibly intense light pulses that can be used to perform extremely advanced analyses of materials. They constitute a new and outstanding tool for scientists, being able as they are to observe the world of ultrafast phenomena which are also microscopic, as they occur at atomic and molecular levels”.
This has been the second edition of the conference, after the one held in Hamburg in 2010, and addressed several aspects related to free electron laser technologies and their components, such as optical instruments or diagnostic instruments used to analyse the laser beam.
