Second Italian-Canadian workshop on New Science with Next Generation Light Sources

The 'Second Italian-Canadian workshop on New Science with Next Generation Light Sources' was held on the 4th and 5th of November 2019 at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste.
Elettra and the Canadian Light Source (CLS) are similar accelerators, both are planning upgrades, and much of the science to be done after the upgrades is related. It therefore makes sense for all concerned to put their heads together and then work together to avoid duplicating effort.

The meeting was opened by Prof. Alfonso Franciosi, CEO and President of Elettra, welcoming the participants and describing the plans for the upgrade of Elettra to Elettra 2.0. This was followed by a presentation from the CEO of the CLS, Prof. Rob Lamb, on the strategies adopted in Canada for arriving at the CLS 2.0 followed by detailed descriptions of the planned science (Silvano Lizzit - Elettra), and machine designs for the new facilities (Emanuel Karantzoulis - Elettra, Mark Boland - CLS, Les Dallin - CLS).

The technical program ranged over many aspects of the new science which will become available with the next generation of synchrotron light sources: from infrared to hard x-rays, light sources (undulator design and monochromator concepts), EXAFS, microscopy, time resolved techniques and many other aspects of advanced machines.
The meeting was characterised by researchers from all sectors of the grand enterprise of synchrotron science engaging in animated discussions of how their part of the activity was related to, affected by, and could affect the other part s of synchrotron operations. In the end well-attended tours of Elettra, FERMI and KYMA, spin off company of Elettra. All participants agreed to explore in detail avenues for further co-operation, sharing of experience and eliminating duplication of effort.
