Workshop Seeding and Self-seeding at New FEL Sources

(ph. Roberto BarnabĂ ) |
SSSFel12 (Trieste, December 10-12, 2012)
About 80 scientists from several institutes in the world have met on occasion of the workshop Seeding and Self Seeding at new FEL sources, hosted by the ICTP at the Adriatico Guesthouse.
The workshop was dedicated to critically examine new concepts and long-standing ideas for seeding x-ray FELs. Short wavelength FELs are indeed opening new scenarios in different scientific disciplines related to chemistry, physics and biology and the spectral quality of free electron laser amplifiers can be greatly enhanced by seeding this type of lasers with a coherent signal. For this reason several ideas for seeding FEL amplifiers have been proposed in recent years, as high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG), echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG), seeding with high order harmonics generated in gas (HHG), self-seeding, and oscillators. These techniques are promising unprecedented brightness and stability and the workshop provided an excellent opportunity to examine the experimental results obtained so far, analyse the advantages introduced by the new schemes, identify critical technology development and potential physics show-stoppers which will influence the design and developments of short wavelength FELs in the next years.
