50 experts from 16 international facilities involved in the 3rd Workshop on Particle Accelerator Upgrade - Removal and Installation
|
From March 18th to 20th, the 3rd Workshop on Particle Accelerator Upgrade - Removal and Installation was held in Trieste. Unlike the previous two editions, which were conducted online, this edition marked the first fully in-person gathering. The success of the previous editions spurred the organization of this in-person event. Across the globe, numerous projects are underway for constructing or upgrading particle accelerators. Despite differences in location, regulations, scale, and intended use (such as High Energy Physics or Lightsource), these projects share many common aspects concerning logistics, services, removal, installation, and disposal of outdated components. This workshop brought together 50 experts from 16 facilities worldwide, representing regions including Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, and Korea. The aim was to foster the exchange and comparison of experiences, lessons learned, and techniques in a peer-to-peer environment. The event featured 19 presentations and nine 5-minute "flash talks," along with 14 posters showcasing projects from various facilities. These projects ranged from recently upgraded facilities to those in the midst of upgrades or nearing the Removal & Installation phase, while others were still in the design phase. Topics covered included logistics (such as space management, handling, and transportation), cabling, and work organization. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to visit Elettra on the afternoon of the second day, gaining firsthand insight into the ongoing preparation activities for the Upgrade Project Elettra 2.0. |
